Designated as a World Heritage Site, Sigiriya consists of an ancient citadel built by King Kasyapa in the 5th century. On the sigiriya site consist the ruins of an upper palace, which were on the flat top of the rock, a mid-level terrace, which included the Lion Gate and the mirror wall with its frescoes, and lower palaces, which clung to the slopes below the rocks. From the base of the rock, the moats, fort, walls and gardens of the palace stretched for a few hundred meters. The site was both a palace and a fortress. Cisterns carved into the rock are part of the upper palace on top of the rock
