Getting to Yala

Yala is located in the southeast corner of Sri Lanka, about 300 km from the capital city of Colombo. The nearest airport is in Mattala, which is about an hour’s drive from Yala. You can also reach Yala by train or bus from Colombo or other major cities in Sri Lanka.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Yala is between February and July, when the weather is dry and the animals are more active. The park is closed in September and October due to the monsoon season.

The average temperature in Yala ranges from 26°C to 30°C, so make sure to bring light clothing, sunscreen, and a hat.

Things to Do in Yala 

Yala Jeep safari

Take a guided jeep safari through the park, where you can spot leopards, elephants, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species. The park is open from 6 am to 6 pm, and the best time to spot wildlife is in the early morning or late afternoon.

Folklores Associated with the Sites

The park is steeped in folklore and legend, with many stories and myths associated with the various sites. According to local legend, the park was once home to a giant demon king named Ravana, who was defeated by Lord Rama in a great battle. The Sithulpawwa Rock Temple is also shrouded in mystery, with many stories of ancient sages and monks who lived there and performed miracles.
